How to Block a Website

Some websites are really distracting!

The method is totally not helpful at all! I don’t know why the Edge Browser could bypass the hosts file even I cleared the cache of the browser and DNS and restarted my computer. This way only worked for a little while but then the block didn’t work!

Now I spent 35CHF for the software Cold Turkey to block these websites…

OS: Windows 11.

  1. Edit the hosts file:
    a. Press Win + S to open the search bar.
    b. Type “Notepad” in the search bar.
    c. Right-click on “Notepad” in the search results and select “Run as administrator.”
    d. Click “Yes” if prompted by the User Account Control.
    e. In Notepad, click “File” > “Open.”
    f. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and change the “Text Documents” dropdown to “All Files” in the bottom right corner.
    g. Open the “hosts” file.
    h. At the end of the file, add the following lines:

127.0.0.1 www.bilibili.com
127.0.0.1 bilibili.com

i. Save the changes by clicking “File” > “Save” and then close Notepad.

  1. Encrypt the hosts file with a password:
    a. Download the Wise Folder Hider https://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-folder-hider.html.
    b. Generate a random password with use online password generators like https://passwordsgenerator.net/.
    c. Set the password of the Wise Folder with the one generated above.
    d. Hide and encrypt the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc with the password generated above.
    e. Write down the password on a piece of paper and lock it elsewhere, far from where you usually stay, or directly throw it into Lake Geneva!
